Susanna Mälkki a rapidement obtenu une reconnaissance internationale pour son talent de direction d’orchestre, manifestant autant d’aisance dans le répertoire symphonique et lyrique que dans celui des formations de chambre ou des ensembles de musique contemporaine.
Née à Helsinki, elle mène une brillante carrière de violoncelliste avant d’étudier la direction d’orchestre avec Jorma Panula et Leif Segerstam à l’Académie Sibelius. De 1995 à 1998, elle est premier violoncelle de l’Orchestre Symphonique de Göteborg, qu’elle est aujourd’hui régulièrement invitée à diriger. Elle est nommée « Fellow of the Royal Academy of Music » de Londres  en juin 2010. En 2011, Susanna Mälkki reçoit la « Pro Finlandia Medal of The Order of the Lion of Finland », l’une des plus hautes distinctions finlandaises.  
Profondément engagée au service de la musique contemporaine, elle a collaboré avec  de nombreux ensembles, avant de faire ses débuts avec l’Ensemble intercontemporain en 2004 au Festival de Lucerne. Elle est nommée Directrice musicale en 2005. En mars 2007, elle dirige le concert anniversaire des trente ans de l’Ensemble  aux côtés  de Pierre Boulez et de Peter Eötvös.
Directrice artistique de l’Orchestre symphonique de Stavanger de 2002 à 2005, Susanna Mälkki s’investit également dans l’interprétation du répertoire symphonique classique et moderne. Elle collabore avec de nombreuses et prestigieuses formations internationales : orchestres philharmoniques de Berlin, de Los Angeles, de Munich, de Radio France, orchestres symphoniques de Chicago, de Boston, de San Francisco, Pittsburgh, et de Seattle, Philharmonia Orchestra, Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, Wiener Symphoniker, Bayerischen Rundfunks, orchestres symphoniques de la radio suédoise et de la radio finlandaise,  etc.    
Susanna Mälkki est aussi très active dans le domaine de l’opéra. Au cours des saisons précédentes elle a notamment dirigé Powder Her Face de Thomas Ades, Neither de Morton Feldman, L’Amour de loin, de Kaija Saariaho dont elle crée, à Vienne, La Passion de Simone, en 2006, œuvre dont elle assure la première américaine en 2008 au Lincoln Center de New York. En mars 2010 elle assure la direction musicale du ballet Siddharta, d'Angelin Preljocaj et Bruno Mantovani, créé à l’Opéra de Paris, qu’elle retrouvera en 2013-2014 pour deux productions. En avril 2011 elle fait ses débuts à la Scala de Milan, dans Quartett un opéra de Luca Francesconi. En 2012 elle dirige la première de Re Orso, opéra de Marco Stroppa, à l’Opéra comique avec l’Ensemble intercontemporain.     
Les saisons actuelles et futures sont riches de nouveaux projets avec de nombreuses formations musicales. Aux Etats-Unis elle retrouvera notamment l’Orchestre symphonique de Chicago, et l’Orchestre philharmonique de Los Angeles et dirigera également les orchestres de Detroit du New Jersey et l’Orchestre symphonique « New World ».  En Europe, en plus des ses collaborations régulières, elle dirigera, le ORF Radio-Symphonieorchester Wien, le SWR Sinfonie Orchester Baden-Baden et Freibourg, l’Orchestre philharmonique de Luxembourg, de Tamprere et celui de la radio Néerlandaise.

A much sought-after artist on the international conducting circuit, Susanna Mälkki’s versatility and broad repertoire have taken her to symphony orchestras, chamber orchestras, contemporary music ensembles and opera houses throughout the world. She is currently Music Director of the Ensemble intercontemporain, having previously been Artistic Director of the Stavanger Symphony Orchestra.

Recent highlights have included debuts with the Chicago and San Francisco symphony orchestras, as well as returns to the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra (at the Holland Festival), Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France, Mostly Mozart Festival in New York, and appearances with the Berliner Philharmoniker, Symphonieorchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks, Gulbenkian Orchestra and the Indianapolis, Pittsburgh, Seattle, Gothenburg, Swedish Radio and Finnish Radio symphony orchestras. She returned to the 2012 BBC Proms to conduct the Philharmonia Orchestra, with whom she works regularly.

This season sees Mälkki work with the ORF Radio-Symphonieorchester Wien, Orchestre Philharmonique du Luxembourg, SWR Sinfonieorchester Baden-Baden und Freiburg, Tampere Philharmonic and Netherlands Radio Philharmonic orchestras. In North America, she will give performances with the Detroit, New World and New Jersey symphony orchestras and will return to the Los Angeles Philharmonic. Further ahead, she will return to the Chicago Symphony Orchestra.

In April 2011 she made her debut at La Scala, Milan – the first woman to do so in the opera house’s prestigious history – and has already been invited to return (in January 2014). In spring 2010 she conducted the world premiere of a ballet by Bruno Mantovani at Opéra national de Paris and will conduct two productions there in the 2013/14 season. Other opera commitments have included Der Rosenkavalier and Saariaho's L'Amour de Loin at Finnish National Opera and the world premiere of Marco Stroppa’s Re Orso at the Opéra Comique in Paris.

Susanna Mälkki made her debut with the Ensemble intercontemporain in August 2004 with an all-Birtwistle programme at the Lucerne Festival; the concert was the catalyst for her appointment as Music Director in 2006. A former student at the Sibelius Academy, Susanna Mälkki studied with Jorma Panula and Leif Segerstam. Prior to her conducting studies, she had a successful career as a cellist and from 1995 to 1998 she was one of the principals of the Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra in Sweden. In June 2010 she was elected a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Music in London and she is also a member of the Royal Swedish Academy of Music. In 2011, Mälkki was awarded the Pro Finlandia Medal of the Order of the Lion of Finland, one of Finland’s highest honours.
