Supporting creation since 1976

The creation of new music has been hardwired into the Ensemble’s genes since first established in 1976 by Pierre Boulez. Conceived as an instrument to forward and foster musical invention, the Ensemble has premiered more than 800 works over the past 40 years, many of which are now part of the global musical heritage.
As the Ensemble has grown, it has set up various structures to locate emerging talent and support composers (commissions, reading committees, launchpad concerts, etc). This close relationship between composers and performers has given rise to original and innovative musical projects.
